I’m a local boy. I attended Tumwater Grade School, Olympia High School and The Evergreen State College. I’ve lived in Lacey in the same house for 43 years.
I joined the US Army and spent 5 and a half in service to our country including two years as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. I am a charter member of the Lacey American Legion post.
Upon discharge I went to work for the Washington State Department of Corrections at Cedar Creek Youth Camp where I worked with court-committed delinquent boys for seven years. I returned to college to get my degree in social work.
Upon graduation from The Evergreen State College I changed my area of interest and went to work for The Lacey Leader newspaper in Lacey where I became the editor. I covered every aspect of Lacey government and community activities.
I worked as the community relations director for the North Thurston School District – the first person to hold that position. I also did public relations work for The Evergreen State College and the Washington Department of Transportation.
I started my own business – Balsley and Associates – and provided public relations service for many different groups including the Port of Olympia where I helped develop the port’s newsletter The Navigator.
For nearly 30 years I published a subscriber only political and business newsletter called Ken’s Corner & The Real News.” I transferred it to on-line publication six years ago.
I also worked for KGY Radio for 19 years where I broadcast commentaries on a regular basis and started my Coffee With Ken radio show which continues on-line at kenbalsley.com.
